Attraction and Retention Testimonials

Sometimes we get so busy, that we forget that we do need to step out of the normal day-to-day so we can update our understanding of current HR trends. As my role is to help businesses in an advisory capacity, attending ‘Attracting and Retaining Talent’ was an excellent way for me to update my knowledge. Bridget Hogg’s facilitation style ensured that all voices were heard, and she encouraged robust discussion whilst still imparting her knowledge and support. The training materials are very thorough and a great take-away resource. I highly recommend Development at Work Australia and if you have the opportunity to attend one of Bridget’s workshops, go for it!

Attracting and Retaining the right people continues to be a challenge and one that certainly is not going to get easier any time soon.  Having once attended Bridget’s MasterClass a few years ago, I went along to the March 2018 half-day workshop for a recap and for fresh perspective.  I came away reminded about key concepts about employer branding and retention, insights into other businesses’ challenges and a practical tool to provide a structured approach to formulating an attraction and retention plan.  Taking a few hours out to get on track was important and worthwhile.

We recently used Development at Work Australia for scribing and reference checking, Bridget was very responsive and contactable. Her team were very professional, with the work turned around quickly, and to a high standard. Working with Bridget and her team was a real pleasure and their assistance made the recruitment process easier on our side and enabled us to turn around our reports in a shorter timeframe. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend their services. Regards,

“Helping Hand invested in this training to ensure that our recruitment decision makers have the right skills, knowledge and support to achieve positive outcomes. The training delivered by Development at Work focused on the interviewing and decision making skills and provided the opportunity to practice the learning within the workshop. This is an especially important feature of the training approach. Feedback from participants was very positive with 80% of participants confirming that the key learning outcomes were met…a solid return on investment. Participant comments included:

  • Very useful day providing practical advice that can be put into action right now
  • It was one of the best workshops I have been to

We are all on the same page now in regards to recruiting. The process is structured and easy to follow

I would recommend this training to organisations seeking to increase the recruitment skills of their managers.”

For some, it was a good refresher on the importance of this as part of our role and a good reminder of the cost if we don’t pay attention to it. The workbook was useful and people were able to develop a plan as they went through the day.”

“As a result of your seminar on phased retirement, all the HR Managers and leaders present will have realised there are many factors to take into account before they start to implement phased retirement in their organisations. This seminar really helped to make the pre-requisites for a successful program clear. It is an excellent addition to the workforce development tools available to Service Skills SA. Thanks and Regards”

“As we head towards an employee’s market, attending the Attracting and Retaining Talent Masterclass proved to be an invaluable exercise in finding creative solutions and innovative ways to onboard talented staff at every level. “Bridget’s workshops are such a refreshing change from the plethora of workshops I have attended over many years. They are insightful, knowledgeable and full of practical ideas that can immediately be applied back at work. She makes learning fun. She challenged me to look at things in an entirely different way and what I have learned I have applied and noticed an immediate difference in my approach, whether that be interviewing for staff or knowing how to interpret people’s reaction to change. She has made a real difference to our organisation!”

“The Attracting & Retaining Talent Masterclass was a very pragmatic course, in that the practical tools provided can be used throughout any industry. Brian Tarry, General Manager Human Resources, Intercast & Forge
…………..

“I thought this session (The Managers Role in Retention™) was very good for upper management to do as it highlights the savings these strategies can make. We often are constrained as a not for profit organisation by the perception of wasting money. I have and do advocate that looking after our staff can only benefit all involved including our client base, and that is the perception we need.

Your course was good at highlighting the benefits of staff retention and therefore that it is money well spent, actually an investment in social capital

So thank you for the support and guidance in a very important ideology – look after your staff and they will look after everything else!!”
John Leicester, Acting Program Manager – Housing, Helping Hand Aged Care
…………..

“The Attracting and Retaining Talent Masterclass was probably the best one day training course I have attended in the last ten years. Bridget’s easy-going presentation style enabled plenty of interaction amongst the attendees and we were able to share our experiences in trying to attract and retain staff. The Masterclass was extremely informative and provided a very useful, practical and appropriate model for the development of a Workforce Attraction and Retention Plan. I have already used the model to develop a strategic plan for a specific work group. I wish more training courses were as good as the Masterclass!”
John Windsor, Human Resource Manager, SA Dental Service
…………..

“Since taking the Masterclass, my senior management team and I have a greater awareness of the impact that all managers, whether they are at a supervisory level, eg, coordinators and even team leaders, have … over those working within their scope of responsibility. While we except great outcomes from them, we often don’t arm them with the appropriate skills to carry out their roles. The Masterclass has given us greater clarity in supporting our managers to work better. We will be engaging Bridget to run the “The Manager’s Role in staff Retention” for all our management staff.”
Lis Burtnik, Formerly Chief Executive Officer, Life’s for Living
…………..

“I found the day very insightful, and in particular, the session on Employer Branding. It confirmed in my mind that management style is critical in retaining staff, and was a timely reminder of the importance of feedback to staff, flexibility and generally meeting their needs/expectations. “I’d just like to say that your Attracting and Maintaining Talent Masterclass was fantastic. It was practical, relevant and the most useful course I have been to since my time in HR. The content was readily translated in the workplace and I have used all of the materials that you gave us for writing reports and guiding our workforce planning, attraction and retention strategies. Very rarely do you attend a course and take away so much from it!
Thanks Bridget.”

“I keenly anticipated being provided with some very useful outcomes and methodologies when I convinced my Director that I should attend the Attracting & Retaining Talent Masterclass – and I was not disappointed. Thank you Bridget for pointing out the right questions to ask ourselves with regard to our A&R practices and philosophies! I particularly found the A& R Plan and the Workforce Planning suggestions to be very useful and the foundation to build a positive framework on. Thank you Bridget for your genuine interest in A&R, your cheerful disposition and your research and understanding of the issues.

Now comes the time for implementation. We prefer to have an innovative outlook and anticipate developing a brand that will compel our staff to stay with us and attract high quality and genuine people to our Council!”
Stephen Birch, Human Resources Office, District Council of Yorke Peninsula

“Like most managers, I can not achieve my Council’s targets unless I have the appropriate, reliable staff . Once you have built up a great team you don’t want to lose any members, so The Managers Role in Retention seminar assisted me to understand the dynamics of the “team spirit” and how to keep the spirit alive. It helped me contemplate the needs of individuals plus how to relate to the changes currently occurring in the Local Government area of employment.

Due to attending this seminar, I now know what indicators to put in place with my team to ensure , as a manager I can retain the appropriate staff. The workshop was enjoyable and involved quality information which I could use.

I would recommend this workshop to any manager who considers their team highly.”
Ken O’Neill, Manager Regulatory Services, City of Holdfast Bay

“As a newcomer to the HR world, I found ‘The Managers Role in Retention’ enormously beneficial; a wonderful opportunity that highlighted how critical it is to attract and retain the right people, which is especially important when skilled staff are in short supply. We endeavour to retain our staff, but this workshop reinforced that improvement is always possible. The processes of recruiting and retaining must be actively managed with communication and feedback being essential. I am now in a much better position to help select the right staff and feel empowered about managing our existing talented people.”

“Prior to attending the Attracting and Retaining Talent Masterclass, I thought I knew how to attract staff, just tell people how good the company was. The Masterclass gave me a whole new perspective on why people would want to work for a company. It also showed me that every company, no matter what its industry, can apply Bridget’s principles of Attracting and Retaining Talent. Anyone involved in recruitment can benefit from principles that Bridget teaches and these can be applied immediately from returning from the class.”

Talking about The Managers Role in Retention™ for the Toro Australia top team:
“It was much better than I thought it was going to be. It promoted a lot of discussion and you allowed it to take its own course and brought the discussion back when it needed to be. It opened up ideas and let people talk about things…It was great”
Richard Walne, Managing Director, Toro Asia Pacific and Australia
………….

“I really liked the practical approach on the Attracting and Retaining Talent Masterclass – especially ‘the equation’ and Employer Branding Strategy. It was very helpful in helping me identify ways to improve attraction and retention of staff and, as a result, I’m going to improve our employment branding and finalise our A&R policy and plan.

We know that programs of this nature do not survive unless there is senior management support. In turn this will not be given unless they are clear that the program in question adds value to the organisation. Bridget was able to help participants crystallise a means of demonstrating the added value of an attraction and retention program for any senior management team, but at the same time make it particularly relevant to a specific organisation.

Bridget is an energetic and enthusiastic presenter who makes sure her audience is engaged. She made sure that there were opportunities also to learn from others in the group.”

The Managers Role in Retention is a brilliant opportunity to further understand the importance of attracting and retaining talent, particularly with the prediction of staff shortages over the next few decades. I particularly found the practical examples and the way we worked through participant issues very useful in consolidating the subjects discussed during the day. “The Performance Conversations and Feedback session run by Bridget was extremely useful. Having only managed staff for a few years, I was keen to extend my thinking about managing performance. The day reiterated to me the importance of continuous feedback and communication. The workshop assist me to develop some strategies to ensure that this topic stayed on my agenda and becomes part of my everyday practice with staff. The workshop allowed us to also share some of our more frustrating performance management issues, and work through these. It was a great exercise to see how different people approach different situations and what may be the consequence of various approaches. Bridget lead the group well, allowing the group to drive some discussions, but bring it back in line when needed. “I found Development at Work Australia’s ‘Attracting and Retaining Talent’ Masterclass both informative and thought provoking. As a country council faced with an aging workforce and serious competition from developing industries for talented staff I was keen to find a fresh approach and to discuss some workable solutions. Bridget Hogg’s planned approach is excellent and as well as clearly identifying the problem will encourage ownership of the solution at departmental / sub unit level.

The opportunity to network with other councils on a range of issues was invaluable.

“With the economy currently flourishing and competition for talented team members intensifying it is vital, if not essential, to take the time to participate in the Attracting and Retaining Talent Masterclass. The session was well structured with open participation and sharing of ideas from a range of industries. The key benefit for me was to re-position a number of initiatives we currently have in place to align them more with the overall purpose of attracting and retaining talent. We’re currently achieving 97% employee retention in the IT sector, but that’s no reason to be complacent. My sincerest thanks to Bridget, Sherylee and to fellow participants for a very rewarding session.”

“I have found the Masterclass beneficial for a number of reasons. It was good to interact with a number of managers from other industries, and gain their perspective on issues affecting business. I enjoyed the interaction and discussion groups pertaining to the Masterclass. You literally don’t have the opportunity to just sit back and listen – you have to engage and participate. You obviously have worked with a number of companies and can bring some beneficial insights into the attraction and retention of staff. The case studies relate to issues you have already dealt with and I certainly believe that “Development at Work Australia” has encouraged us along the path to developing our own strategic plan in this respect for our own organisations. Outplacement and Change Management Testimonials

Having met many others from similar backgrounds, I admit I was skeptical at first. However, during my initial introduction, it became clear that Bridget was not only very personable, but was educated, experienced, and had conducted considerable research in her field(s).

I found Bridget to be thorough, and most importantly, adapted her approach. Bridget seemed to identify where my strengths and weaknesses were, and focused the majority of our time on the latter. Additionally, Bridget helped explain and identify pitfalls in the application, interview, and recruitment processes that many people fall into and gave great advice on how to avoid these. I have no doubt this will be invaluable in the coming weeks/months.

I would also add that Bridget was very aware of the mental health impact that situations like this can have on people and regularly encouraged use of the therapy services available, through both EAP and her own organisation. Although I personally did not utilise these services, it is great to know that they’re available, and I appreciate Bridget’s open and caring personality.

I have selected Development at Work Australia as our outplacement provider for many years over different organisations and have always been impressed by the responsiveness and high levels of service.

Bridget Hogg, Principal Consultant, has personally provided outplacement services to many people across the sporting and energy industries. She has assisted out outplaced people to manage the emotional impact of redundancy and has coached them in managing their emotional state whilst seeking new employment. Bridget also assisted outplaced candidates to find their next direction and she effectively coaches them in resume writing; job application techniques; finding the hidden jobs; finding alternative employment routes (such as self-employment); and interview skills.

Bridget’s NLP credentials and background in psychology, coupled with her many years of experience as an outplacement consultant enable her to address the core issues with our people – helping them to see and find light at the end of the tunnel.

A few years ago, I was in need of a consultant who could handle our outplacement in a holistic way. My criteria for a successful outplacement consultant included providing an educational service to managers in addition to the support and assistance throughout the process from end to end. After phoning 3 different companies, Bridget was the only one who returned my call the same day and made a time to meet with me. Before our meeting, Bridget and the team at Development at Work Australia sent preparatory information which was actually useful (rather than being salesy or ‘fluff’). Upon meeting Bridget, my immediate impression was her warmth and compassion, coupled with her knowledge and obvious experience. To top it off, Development at Work Australia quoted a very reasonable price for their tiered services which, with everything taken together as a whole, I knew I had found the consultant who could work with us.  I continue to recommend Bridget’s team at Development at Work Australia as I trust and highly value the services they provide.

Bridget provides customised, personal support that makes all the difference. As a retrenched older worker it has been a long time since I went through searching and applying for a job and in the meantime personal computers, the internet and the web process has utterly changed how things are done. Starting all over again is daunting. Bridget’s consultancy is well paced, affirming, recognises and builds on our strengths and teaches us the necessary new skills at a pace we can absorb and apply effectively. Many thanks. Hi Bridget, I just wanted to send an email to thank you and the team for the support given to me over recent weeks following my Redundancy from Barossa Mitre 10.

The time gave me the opportunity to look over the last 30 years and identify achievements, as well as my assets as an employee…some of which I did not realise I possessed until our conversation brought them to mind.

I am looking forward to a great future with a positive mindset and renewed confidence, knowing that I will succeed in life no matter what obstacles come before me.

I will have no hesitation in using your services if the need arises and will encourage others to do so also, should they find they need some support and encouragement in their employment process.

Thank you again, and please pass on my thanks to your team.

I found the course really useful, and I did not realise that I needed as much help with my CV, and interview technique as I did. I found the workshops a great help in presenting my CV in a style that encouraged employers to invite me for an interview. I would recommend the course to everyone as it contains great advice.

I found Bridget’s course (Next Steps Job Seeker workshop) extremely useful.  It was interesting to see and hear the perspective of the interviewer and what they want to hear and see, and that gave me more confidence to be the interviewee.  I found the SOAR acronym particularly helpful as it gave me a structure to answer all questions from the interviewer, both easy and difficult, and this made it much easier.  The use of the words as a sentence starter was particularly helpful.

I also found my resume writing improved beyond measure.  I also saw this from the employer’s perspective and understood more fully exactly what they would like to see in a resume.

Bridget was an enthusiastic, patient and knowledgeable tutor.

Thankyou for your assistance during my recent outplacement counselling sessions. I have no hesitation in saying that the sessions were major factor in my finding suitable employment so quickly. The personal meeting sessions were relaxed and productive. From the first session my confidence was raised…When first provided with the offer of outplacement counselling from my previous employer I had not really decided whether to take up the opportunity. I had a preconceived view of this type of counselling more as a stress or grief management service than as a pro-active employment training exercise…I may not even have contacted (Bridget) if you had not made the initial contact. Needless to say I am now extremely glad you did… The entire program was extremely useful.

On behalf of the Southern Metropolitan Employment and Skills Formation Network (representing the DFEEST South Australia Works program) and the Cities of Onkaparinga and Marion, I would like to commend Development at Work Australia for their management and implementation of the recently completed Trades Promotion project. This workforce development project was initiated to professionally document immediate skills shortages in the region, to assist the Network develop training programs to match demand.

The Trades Promotion project ran from September 2005 to December 2006 and involved extensive industry consultation, data gathering, training program development and individual participant support (for both employers and jobseekers).

At around mid project there was a significant change in focus for the program in March 2006 (extending the program to December 2006) towards greater individual participant and group support, through targeted job seeker workshops. This eventuated as a reaction to the needs of the training participants, who were still no job ready after completing their various technical training courses. While Development at Work Australia was responsible for all aspects of the project, their strong human resource background, flexibility and project management skills enabled them to easily adapt to this change in focus from the original project brief.

There were two main successful outcomes from the project. These were:

The identification of local employers wanting to be involved in workforce development activities for their current and future staff (one employer received a State award for their involvement in a subsequent program resulting from this project).

The provision of individual and group support for a number of jobseekers identified through the project led to many gaining employment.

The success of the Trades Promotion Project was due to the skill and effort provided by Development at Work Australia  and as a result I do not hesitate in recommending them for similar types of projects in future.

Bridget provided outplacement support for a number of people in 2001 when I worked at SA Brewing. Clearly there were some high emotions involved for individuals with this change and they all spoke glowingly of her ability to be supportive, objective and keep them focussed on what they had to do next. They were also quick to comment on Bridget’s genuine concern and how at ease they felt with her. Additionally, Bridget provided career counselling for another individual using a variety of techniques to help them come to the conclusion their current role was incompatible with what they truly wanted to be doing. She achieved what years of internal coaching had not been able to! I would have no hesitation calling on Bridget’s services again.

Assessment & Selection

I attended the Competency-Based Interview Skills Training developed for Super SA, and was very impressed by Bridget’s knowledge and friendly presentation style. I’ve done a lot of interviewing in the past, but because Bridget adapted her material to the needs of the attendees, I came out feeling that I had picked up new skills and tools that I could apply in a practical way. Bridget has a very good understanding of the Government context and the particular recruitment challenges we face, and she presented tools to help us adapt interview questions, and to help interviewees understand the questions to give them the best possible chance to succeed.

“I found the interview skills training course very helpful. Going into the course I had no previous experience conducting interviews. Within my new role as a Housekeeping Team Leader I will be taking part in interviewing perspective employees. So the information in the course helped me understand the interview process and the guidelines to go by. Learning and understanding the SOAR technique in particular was very useful, as well as interesting, having been only previously interviewed for my role. It helped me understand the process and the questions i was being asked. Doing multiple practices of the interview questions and SOAR technique was a good way to practice different kinds of questions and how to get the responses you need to make the assessment of that persons interview. It was very helpful to hear other people in the courses, having more experience or not, their questions and input also. Therefore finding out the correct procedures for interviews.

It is with pleasure that I write this testimonial for Development at Work Australia  specifically Bridget.  Over the many years of attending various workshops and tapping into the wealth of knowledge that Bridget has I have found her to be accommodating, negotiable, flexible and works with you to achieve your business outcomes.

She is a great communicator, knows her deliverables and engages with her audience.  She makes the workshops fun and interactive, while also delivering important messages that allow you to connect it with your workplace.  I have found Bridget to be professional and engaging and nothing is too much hard work for Bridget.  She openly shares her knowledge and passes on relevant information, connections and links to others as a result of interests or conversations or topics of interest you engage in.

I therefore have no hesitation in partnering with Development at Work Australia to help any organisation achieve their specific HR outcome, whether that be in training and development, health and well-being, attraction and retention, performance management or any other people related matters.

Well done Bridget, keep up the great work, deliverables and networking that you provide.

I found that changing your story was immensely powerful to get you rewriting your internal dialogue from being negatively biased to a more positive and grateful for what you do have. This is hugely beneficial in changing your underlying emotions that allow you to take positive actions and move forward and help you achieve your goals.

The focus wheel analogy was fun in that it allowed you to easily think of little steps and generalised affirming notions that could also act as a springboard for setting you up emotionally to achieve the challenge you wanted to overcome once again in a positive more empowered sense. The potential dread of overcoming the challenge was replaced by a sense of self-belief and confidence that you could successfully overcome it.

“It is critically important that we all take the time to stop and participate in training from time to time that enables us to calibrate our current practices and activities in the wellbeing and resilience space. I enjoyed the opportunity to listen, engage and learn from others in the room as well and have the direct conversation with a trainer who shares a breadth of knowledge and experience relative to the subject matter at hand. I recommend the training as a valuable exercise to ensure people are being effective and understanding in the work environment”

Next Steps Job Seeker Project Testimonials

“I find these workshops particularly encouraging and engaging. What I liked best was the chance to meet others who are going through the same journey as me. And in particular it is the way the workshops are conducted. You are part of the discussions, and not talked down to. It has built a lot of confidence in me and I am able to go out there and promote myself. I have generally been shy of meeting people, especially when it’s to talk about myself. But now, with these workshops I feel more confident about my skills and talents.

The focus wheel forced me to dig up the various skills and talents I already have and give me the confidence to get to where I want to go. Talking to the HR lady gave more insight into what exactly happens when we send out resumes. And the exercise of ‘positive trigger point’ is especially useful to remind ourselves to stay confident and feel good from time to time. All it takes is a touch on the arm and I remind myself about all the good things in my life and it makes me smile.

Thanks Bridget for these wonderful sessions.”

“Hi Bridget, I would just like to thank you for the opportunity you gave me to participate in the Christmas Gift program.  Being new in Australia I was not sure of what was expected of me or if my resume was in the right format.  Thanks to your workshop on resume writing I found out that my resume was way too long and too detailed.  I have adjusted my resume and will start applying for jobs soon.

Your assistance with the interview skills will also help me a lot when I will be called for an interview and I will be better prepared for the interview questions.

Due to the program I could also attend the Apply First Aid course free of charge and that is much appreciated.

The Christmas Gift program really came at the right time and I’ve learned a lot from you participating in it.”

Equine Assisted Learning Testimonials

Equine Training was an amazing experience. What I learnt was that in order for the horses to trust you and follow you, you had to be in a state of self confidence and be intentional in your actions. It’s really given me an appreciation of how my state impacts others. Ruth Morgan, Creating Healthy Careers

…………..

I had the pleasure of recently attending Equine Assisted Learning and it was without doubt one of the best training courses that I have experienced in a long-time. It was not only the unique concept that makes up this training that appealed, but it was also the various challenges that participants were given – such as team-work, listening techniques and strategic ways of thinking all in the outdoor setting and working with the horses. I came away from this day with a new perspective on team communication and the ways in which as individuals we seek to understand each other.
I highly recommend Equine Assisted Learning to any organisation seeking to engage, challenge and improve their teams and the general well-being of their staff.
Bridget Ransome, Economic Development, Mount Barker District Council

…………..

My opportunity to participate in the Equine Assisted Learning thanks to the Next Steps Program was an out of the ordinary, extraordinary experience. Having fallen once from a horse I was apprehensive of the initial concept. I pushed myself to face a fear of being up close and personal with a horse again, not to ride one, in a very comfortable and supportive environment. It taught me about working in a team where the horse was a member of the team(all inclusive). Being educated about the sensory side of being around a horse taught me to back myself and to look ahead not downwards as the horse is being lead by my instructions. Ultimately it taught me look ahead and believe in myself.

Thank you it genuinely made me approach my employment seeking in a much more positive and confident frame of mind.

Thanks a bunch, Nikki Jaeger, Interior Designer and Retailer (Nikki found employment 2 weeks after completing Equine Assisted Learning)

…………..

Effectively working together in a positive team environment = fun, joy and love. A fantastic opportunity for confidence, self-awareness and communication skills development! The horses taught me that intention and self-awareness are significant contributors to achieving results. It’s a great day – not to be missed.
Sarah Telford – Entrepreneur

…………..

I found the equine assisted learning insightful. I wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the experience. As a facilitator, Jess was down to earth and knowledgeable. Working with the horses was special and during the exercises I experienced a few meaningful realisations about shifting perspective. It also gave me a better understanding of the dynamics of group communication. The team bonding on the day was a value add and I’d recommend this workshop to anyone looking for a mix of both personal & professional development.
